Category: None Group: None >Status: Open Priority: 5 Submitted By: delphicoder (delphicoder35) >Assigned to: Luke Schierer (lschiere) Summary: Add "Protocol" or "IM Service" box in login (Please read) Initial Comment: To those who maintain GAIM: I've searched through the different forums and did not find a solution regarding a straight-forward login sequence. I've downloaded the latest release (1.5.0) and feel that a minor improvement could be made to make logins even easier. Basically, it would entail adding a "Protocol" or "IM Service" drop-down menu to the login screen. This simple addition would essentially preclude a user from having to go through the "Add Account" process (unless they wanted to of course.) This would make it much easier for family members and guests to login to their respective IM accounts without having to create a profile for them locally (taking default settings of course.) Thanks for your time and ongoing efforts!! It's much appreciated. Take'er easy! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- >Comment By: delphicoder (delphicoder35) Date: 2005-11-10 19:51 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1344822 Given your explanation, I understand your point (as well as the project's desired look for the initial screen.) With that being said, would the coders even entertain the idea of adding a "kiosk" mode of sort via a command line switch? So that way, a shortcut (in Windows or Linux) could be created for the occassion that a guest needs to use their IM account on a friend's computer. The kiosk mode would present the "protocol" dialog along with the account and password prompts. The account list not being a drop-down menu, so that the owners info/config is not messed with. I believe this would be a feature much appreciated as the regular GAIM user of that system won't have to go through the "add account" process as previously mentioned or worry about their settings being modified. Kiosk mode users could customize their session but not be saved to a file. Food for thought. Hope it will be reconsidered. Later! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Luke Schierer (lschiere) Date: 2005-11-10 16:58 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=28833 I don't like this suggestion for one reason really. with the current (1.x) interface, many users come to me asking if it is possible to use several screennames from a single instance of gaim. Obviously they have been confused by the initial dialog gaim presents, which is centric to a single account. This problem was in fact worse when we had a protocol dropdown in the dialog. for this and many other reasons, the dialog is entirely gone in gaim 2.0.0, moving towards a radically different interface. The add account dialog will still be necessary for a new user, or for the first use on a new computer (assuming you don't copy over a .gaim directory). This reflects our belief that most users have a set of accounts that they primarily use which rarely changes. The exception to this belief appears to be when a regular gaim user has a friend over who wishes to sign on just once. This is a problem for gaim in 1.x and continues to be a problem in 2.x, because gaim attempts to provide a unfied display across accounts, abstracting away from the protocols where possible. As part of this, groups are global across accounts and users complain that they cannot "share" a .gaim directory. This is more or less intentional. Gaim provides a -c flag to point to an alternate directory for config info that should be used for other "profiles" (to borrow a word from mozilla). I suspect you may fit into this category. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=200235&aid=1352824&group_id=235 ------------------------------------------------------- SF.Net email is sponsored by: Tame your development challenges with Apache's Geronimo App Server.
