Comma placement here looks a little fragile, but I suppose discard won't
normally be listed first.
FWIW, substring removal is also possible in plain bash e.g.:
  DEFAULT_NODISCARD_OPTS="${DEFAULT_OPTS/,discard=async/}"
Either way...
