Thanks. I don't still have a time to try it out. I'll let you know
once I do. of course you can submit a MR for that prior to that.
For just quick comment, we shouldn't remove public APIs at this point.
also good to update document about <dir>.

I'm wondering if <dir> elements could be moved into the separate file
so one who wants to have own fonts directory list instead of the
default one (like this case) can replace it easily instead of patching
fonts.conf out?
