I assume this means that you did not see the aforementioned error after
checking the format box on the partition that will become '/'. Can you
confirm this?

I have not seen that error message myself but if you don't think that it
was clearly worded enough (and it kind of sounds that way), please file
a bug against anaconda.

I thought that the default layout did create a separate home lv but I
could very well be wrong here. I'm not sure what the LiveCD installer
does off the top of my head, though.

I honestly can't think of anything other than backing up those
partitions before formatting on re-install. Does anyone else have
suggestions?

The change is from a fix for a couple of bugs:

I am not aware of the exact technical reasons on why allowing '/' to be
unformatted is a bad idea, though.
