I have also been talking with Chris (the author of the patch) and his 
issues getting this fixed upstream. He says:

"A Gnome maintainer of gnome-mouse-properties seems to be MIA and I've
not found a good contact to drive submitting that patch.  Maybe
driving from distribution side is best idea for now.  I had thought of
some other improvements to that app but shelved it until I see its
more likely to get changes committed."

Are we in a position to help out here? The hard work is already done, it 
just needs some help to get fixed! :)
