What Ben means is that the nouveau driver really doesn't support operation without KMS (kernel modesetting) any more. Both 'nomodeset' and 'nouveau.modeset=0' do the same thing: they disable KMS. So this method of operation is indeed entirely unsupported, no matter which kernel parameter you use to initiate it. (are you actually using the nouveau driver in this case?
