Ok, I will check into that. However, I have 3 drives, so 
they can't all be failing at once. I do backups daily, and 
sometimes in between, too, if there are a lot of changes.

For the time being, what I did was to disable the KDE Power 
Management (Power Devil), and the system has been running 
smoothly for a couple of hours without the slightest hint of 
a problem. I tend to think it is the power-saving feature 
that is not working correctly.
