I was surprised when the kernel update fixed the problem, at least temporarily, expecting it to be more an xorg-x11-drv-intel thing. I tried remote access several times before the kernel 2.6.30.5 update and ssh was working at that time. There was no way to kill Xorg or get to runlevel 3 but the shell worked and I could run reboot. I assumed kernel corruption of some kind.
