The only problem is that in such way there should be something else sending mail to root you forgot about (say - logwatch, or something else or something which you are going to install in the future). That is why in /etc/aliases you can see the following example: # Person who should get root's mail #root: marc 'firstboot' could have something which would allow to edit that if so desired. Dropping these mails to root, or displaying them with something "clicky-pointy" on a desktop to which you may not be even logged to and which can be far away is the worst possible "solution" one can come up with. Is this happens _only_ if a suitable MTA is not available such thing could be acceptable. Not sure how to do that without supplying some kind of "pretend MTA" (which probably end up bigger and more resource hungry than alternatives).
