What kind of video card do you have?

Did you try booting with the nomodeset kernel parameter?

(I have similar symptoms with my ATI 9200 when I don't use nomodeset.
The system eventually boots into X, but the screen is black until X starts
and vt's don't work. With nomodeset things work fine.)
