Ok, thanks.
Only problem is that I don't get anything remotely like "Pulseaudio" on
the list of output devices.
I moved the configuration files (.audacity & .audacity-data) out of my
home directory, restarted audacity and now I get a bunch of new choices
for the output device. Still no "pulseaudio", but
ALSA: HDA NVidia: ALC861 Digital hw:(0,0)
is there now, and that works! Cool.
