Twiddling the Pulseaudio mixer levels didn't help.

Works for me. I set it to use Pulseaudio rather than ALSA output.

I still have problems with multiple soundcards and the "wrong" one getting chosen sometimes.

I used to have a problem with that but the 'Default' option when right clicking the devices in pavucontrol has been obeyed for awhile now on my system.
