This particular bug was fixed by James Antill in yum upstream. It hasn't
made it to rawhide, yet.
Okay, I'll proceed as if this problem doesn't exist. By Sun (when I'm
back) my kernel bug might be fixed and all will be well again.
The problem with the sqlfiles stuff recurred; I then changed to a
different (local) mirror, _my_ side of the wireless link, and ran "yum
clean metadata" which I expected to clear the problem.
Those two actions did indeed clear it.
The update that worked took 68 minutes. Compared with a new install it's
pretty slow, and might not be too flash on a Pentium III (this is an
Intel vPro system, new SATA disks.
Where was the 68 minutes being used?
Beginning to end. Where would I get better info now the system's been
powered down for some days?
The update that worked was helped by a preceding one that downloaded
everything and then muttered something about dependency problems
regarding some xine package and died.
More specifics would be helpful.
Fair request, I was in a rush and didn't have the info before me. xine's
not likely relevant to the thread. It seems that the above actions
cleared this too.
??
While running a new update to try to reproduce the problem, I see it's
installing lots of unwanted 386 packages. This leads to the question,
why did yum-basearchonly get removed?
[root@potoroo ~]# grep yum-basearchonly /var/log/yum.log* .bash_history
/var/log/yum.log:Apr 09 10:04:03 Erased: yum-basearchonly
/var/log/yum.log-20080225:Feb 24 08:23:07 Updated: yum-basearchonly -
1.1.11-1.fc9.noarch
/var/log/yum.log-20080327:Mar 10 22:31:01 Updated:
yum-basearchonly-1.1.11-5.fc9.noarch
/var/log/yum.log-20080327:Mar 27 01:01:57 Updated:
yum-basearchonly-1.1.13-2.fc9.noarch
.bash_history:rpm -qi yum-basearchonly
.bash_history:yum install yum-basearchonly.noarch
.bash_history:rpm -qi yum-basearchonly.noarch
[root@potoroo ~]#
It looks to have happened as part of an upgrade, not as a moment of my
stupidity:
Apr 09 09:58:39 Updated: system-config-display-1.0.51-9.fc9.noarch
Apr 09 09:58:43 Updated: gnome-desktop-devel-2.22.1-1.fc9.x86_64
Apr 09 09:58:54 Updated: orca-2.22.1-2.fc9.x86_64
Apr 09 10:04:03 Erased: yum-basearchonly
Apr 09 10:09:12 Updated: kernel-xen-2.6.25-0.18.rc8.fc9.x86_64
Apr 09 10:09:13 Updated: kernel-2.6.25-0.204.rc8.git4.fc9.x86_64
Apr 11 21:46:55 Updated: kernel-2.6.25-0.218.rc8.git7.fc9.x86_64
There were quite a few updates that day, I won't bore you with the
whole list:
[root@potoroo ~]# grep 'Apr 09 ' /var/log/yum.log | wc -l
177
[root@potoroo ~]#
It's only resulted in an extra 55 packages so far. but still ....
Package yum-basearchonly is obsoleted by yum, trying to install
yum-3.2.14-10.fc9.noarch instead
Package yum-3.2.14-10.fc9.noarch already installed and latest version
Nothing to do
[root@potoroo ~]#
Oh, so that's why it got removed. Shame about the loss of my expressed
preference. Is this worth reporting to bz? Where is the documentation on
how to do that now (I have looked at the supplied documentation)?
