Yes, I did understand that, and that's exactly what I did.  I can't explain 
why this doesn't work on that laptop, but it's reliably repeatable.

So far I've had no success with rpm either, but a friend has given me a few 
more possibilities to try.  I'll report back later today.

The other option is to get the recent preview downloaded.  If I can't crack it 
today I may have to try that.  My desktop box has been running rawhide for a 
couple of weeks, with several problems, most of which are now resolved.  I'll 
be keeping that one, but the old laptop is purely for testing purposes.
