I turned on metacity compositing manager (compiz does not work still)
and the result is that now it does not play even in totem, with this
error message:

The program 'totem' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'.
  (Details: serial 52 error_code 11 request_code 140 minor_code 19)

So it seems that all these programmes crash/does not play video thanks
to receiving X error.

I've found these bug reports that does seem to describe the problem I'm
having, so I'll add my comments and data to the red-hat one (I don't
have an account on freedesktop's bugzilla ).

Thanks for all your help so far,
Martin
