I just confirmed that enabling ESD, logging out, and logging back in hangs gnome-panel, and killing esd from a vty restores gnome-panel.

I received pop-up messages that said:
The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFIID:GNOME_FastUserSwitchApplet". The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFIID:GNOME_SystemTrayApplet". The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFIID:GNOME_ClockApplet". The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFIID:GNOME_MixerApplet".
... Do you want to delete the applet from your configuration?

I'm going to open a bug against this.
