Oh good, I saw this when working on s-c-ks yesterday and thought it
 might be something I'd broken. So glad I didn't decide to waste my
time looking through my code for a bug yesterday.

I've noticed this too, it seems to have something to do with
gtk-engines or the clearlook theme.

I opened a bug report for this problem and changed to the crux theme. The problem with the checkmarks does not seem to effect crux.

I updated the bug report to reflect the response which made me note the similar problem in case someone is rounding up bug duplicates.
