There are numerous examples of programs which change behaviour depending on a name with which they are called. Try 'ls -li /bin/gzip /bin/gunzip /bin/zcat' for an example with which you are likely pretty familiar. Hence the question "Do you still see the same trouble if you type 'telinit 3'?" still stands.
