gcc segfaults when compiling kernel

somehow gcc segfaults randomly when i try to recompile the kernel.
it's on an x86 athlon-xp nforce2 machine, which worked ok before.

the error message is:
...
CC drivers/ide/ide.o
drivers/ide/ide.c: In function ‘ide_hwif_release_regions’:
drivers/ide/ide.c:448: internal compiler error: Segmentation fault
Please submit a full bug report,
with preprocessed source if appropriate.
See <URL:http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla> for instructions.
The bug is not reproducible, so it is likely a hardware or OS problem.
make[2]: *** [drivers/ide/ide.o] Error 1
make[1]: *** [drivers/ide] Error 2
make: *** [drivers] Error 2

it occurs every time i try, on different parts of the code.
have tried older versions of gcc and glibc, but this doesn't fix it for
me.

cheers
lars
