Thanks to Andy and everybody else who answered my questions. Eventually,
I've found a different solution for the time being. Suse 10.1 beta 2
seems to already have all the needed patches. Sure enough the installer
worked without problems and so did onboard ethernet. Since I* have* to
finish some long and already terribly overdue reports with OpenOffice 2
asap, there was little choice.

I still like Fedora better though :-) and will surely try to install
FC5 final when it's released.
