Perhaps a related issue: floaters has high CPU utilization on my box.

Video card is ATI Technologies Inc Rage 128 Pro Ultra TF,
a low-end card.  My guess is that floaters+Xorg performs many
format conversions of the pixmaps, perhaps due to anti-aliasing
and/or compositing, which low-end hardware does not support well.
Certainly more than onboard-to-screen blit is going on.
