Please forgive me for asking, but you did also check that the controls
aren't muted, right? As far as I can remember, not only does Alsa set
the default volume to 0, it also sets the "Mute" toggle to off. Truly
annoying. (Oh, and by the way, it might be some totally random-sounding
channel that you have to unmute. On my laptop it's "Headphone" which I
guess makes some kind of marginal sense, or well, no not really.)
