Thomas: are your people ripping CDs with those computers ?  I've used
CDParanoia for 2 years and have experienced various crashes with
it/cdroms, especially when ripping scratched CDs.  I'm thinking that
such activity triggers a problem with the communication between the
kernel and the CD drive.

Peter: this might be a good place for you to start troubleshooting on
your computer.  Find a scratched audio CD and start ripping.  I'm pretty
certain you'll be able to replicate my problem.
