I don't think the `nouveau` kernel module is a viable option on newer NVidia cards. I have a laptop with a 1050Ti and nouveau flat out doesn't work - it either black screens or freezes at some random point after showing the display. This is cross-distro; I have the same problem with Ubuntu Bionic, Antergos and Fedora 29 Live beta 1.5. I filed a bug in Bugzilla last night (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1631934) but this is most likely upstream.
