But the fact that this is such a large problem leads me to think there is a bug in some fundamental part of the update chain. As you say, there is no way to know if things are consistent at this point. Would the replacements function as well as the originals if you did force install them? If you are experimenting on only one system, and you do go the force install route, you might want to hold off on updating the other systems for a while to see if this is fixed in newer updates. There must be other people experiencing this problem.
