Are you sure nothing happens? The GUI of gpk-update-application is to be frank somewhat terrible, but it _did_ work when I tested it for Beta. Depending on what stage it's at there may be a progress bar at the bottom, or the icons in the main list-of-updates pane may change if you watch them carefully.
