This bug: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=708525 was resolved for me when comment #4 described the incredibly useful technique of linking the 10-autohint.conf file into the /etc/fonts/conf.d/ directory. On fedora 18, I found the .conf files had moved, but I dug up the new location and made the symlink again, yet the fonts still look like absolute crap on my display. What happened to the marvellous effect autohint used to have?
