There would be no downside to having GNOME Desktop selected by default, just a few benefits (you don't have to open up that spoke if you don't want to change anything, or you don't have to make a choice when you are unsure what the options mean). Ideally start the conversation in anaconda-devel list or make a request in the Bugzilla.
