There actually *is* a mediacheck option. Unfortunately, it's hidden under the Troubleshooting menu, which is bad since media checking is something people should do *before* running into trouble. I filed https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=809663 to make mediacheck the default on install discs. Also see https://lists.fedoraproject.org/pipermail/devel/2012-May/167466.html (referred to in comment 10) which in particular would put mediacheck in the top level, default for installs and non-default for lives. There was no response to this.
