edit yum.conf
change obsoletes=1
to
obsoletes=0
then
yum update grub
Resolving Dependencies
--> Running transaction check
---> Package grub.x86_64 1:0.97-84.fc16 will be installed
--> Finished Dependency Resolution
This will give you the last version before change to grub2
(If you need\want it)

then add
exclude=grub2
to /etc/yum.conf

Remember there will be no more updates to grub (aka grub-legacy)
You get to keep any bits go pear shaped.
