 I managed to mount the guest additions ISO as you mentioned and build the kernel modules before I converted the filesystem but since the conversion and updating the kernel the modules will no longer build.

The complaint is that it can't find the kernel source but that hasn't changed. I suspect it has to do with modules being in /usr/lib. I didn't really spend much time tracking the problem.
