Of course... but I checked it numerous times and it all works when I type it by hand at the grub prompt and it also works when I put it into custom.cfg (copy and paste). I have also written and rewritten it many times, trying all of the various suggestions here in this thread, etc. and variations and it never appears in the grub menu, not even in a defective state. Editing custom.cfg is actually preferable, since you don't need to change those scripts under /etc/grub.d and you don't have to run grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg.
