Thank you for all the help (including off-list) with the key suggestion that the build machine needs to have more than 1GiB RAM to run the new xz compression for iso production (in lorax) - after receiving a 1GiB RAM extension giving a total RAM of 1.5 GiB, and starting with a clean mock chroot in my build machine running F14, a new build of F15 today proceeded without error and produced good install isos.
