The build procedure for scala uses multiple phases to ensure that the code cleanly bootstraps. The sequence is like this: bootstrap (starr) -> locker -> quick -> strap The results of the quick phase are packaged. The results of the strap phase are compared byte-for-byte with the resuts of the quick phase to ensure that the compiler is stable.
