Yes. I have rendered maps using both the cairo and agg backends from a mixture
of shapefile and postgis data sources on an x86_64 machine without any problems.

Workarounds? Is this in the spec file? I haven't looked at that yet as I was
building from my checkout by hand.

I also prefer autoconf, but Artem seems to like scons and it seems to work so I
don't see it as a major problem.

I know. Aside from anything else I wrote the cairo stuff... OpenStreetMap is
running with libicu and cairo support, so it can't that unstable. We're about to
update to the latest svn head in fact.

I'm not aware of any plans for mapnik to become an osgeo project, and I don't
see it listed on the incubator, so I'm not sure where you're getting that
information from.

Perhaps if you just tell us what problem you're having we can fix it!
