The daemon needs the correct hardware to be plugged in to operate. The systemd service file is disabled and the daemon is started from udev when one of the relays is plugged in. If the daemon is manually started without a relay plugged in, the daemon exits but systemd restarts it the configured number of times. (30) I'm not sure of the correct incantation of systemd and the spec to only restart the daemon if it has been running after an upgrade.
