The client software prefers using "matched" firmware on the device, so building and including a firmware image with sane defaults will allow this, without requiring users to install a separate package. The firmware is small and is ideally included in the package so users can 'hit the ground running'. The spec builds clean once strip is overridden and debug disabled, which I think is the least intrusive way to do this.
