It is useful for tools that automatically scans spec files and associate package source code with upstream commit. For instance, I have a tool that can automatically scan through all spec files, get the commit (from the %{commit}) macro and run lint. In this case it can be used to run all tests and associate test results with the commit. Automatic tools can then run tests on the latest upstream commit and determine if all tests pass. Comparing with the commit the tool can then notify a packager saying a new commit with all tests passing is available.
