Neither esmtp nor ssmtp are full blown MTAs. Both (all three, taking msmtp into
account) are intended and can be used as drop-in replacements for sendmail for
those particular cases where one needs to send mail by explicitly calling
/usr/sbin/sendmail and not for the cases when one needs SMTP. mailx is one such
utility. mdadm also is perfectly happy with that...
