The example directory is referred to in PackageInfo.g.  Once can use the in-GAP
documentation system to view a document entitled "GAPDoc Example", which points
to the contents of that directory.  So I think it has to be in the package.

The 3k+1 directory is only referred to in makedocrel.g, which I *think* means
that it is only needed if someone tries to regenerate the documentation.  I'm
not sure if that can (or is likely to be) done from inside GAP itself, however.
