So something very odd is going on with your system - I have absolutely no idea
what the difference is. I'll see if I can find a machine of the same vintage as
yours and duplicate. EFI variables do work, but they don't integrate with the
boot picker and OS X will overwrite them under a range of circumstances, so if
you don't integrate with the boot picker and startup disk UI then there's no
way for the user to choose them again. Less than ideal.

Yeah, I'll rename to hfs-bless. Damned hex editors.

The .disk_label stuff needs an app I wrote for netpbm. It's in upstream, I'll
add it to the Fedora package. The volume labels are actually graphics, because
Apple hate you.
