Use of spectool (from the rpmdevtools package) avoids this problem. Use %{version} in your source URLs and then to download the source, you can do: spectool --gf mypackage.spec The tool parses the spec file like rpm would to evaluate what to use for %{version} and then uses wget to do the download.
