Actually, throwing an exception doesn't change the code functionality in a
significant way. It still stops the application if it's not caught but provides
better memory handling. 
To me, using exit() in shared libraries is pretty amateurish style, especially
in combination with C++. I also haven't seen it in any of the scientific
packages I use. But anyway, if it's OK to leave it in the package, I can live
with it.
