I have to agree with Joe, the number of mailing lists and IRC channels started getting out of hand long ago and it keeps getting worse.
Defaulting to open implies to me that we not only don't have private discussions but also do not obscure them.

(I really wonder whether we needed a separate list for magazine discussions - I haven't noticed the marketing list traffic being so heavy that it was necessary to separate them out, and this means that people who sign up for marketing will miss out on a chunk of marketing-related discussions.)
