Take a look at the current quake3-demo wrapper, .autodlrc and .desktop
file for an example howto do this

I would still prefer a separate package since yum install <foo> would
work and people searching for the binary can find it easily.
Well, yum install can be fixed with an virtual provides, however Add/Remove
software from the applications menu can't, so I'm siding with you on this and
I've made a new package for this:
