I can reproduce the problem with istanbul concerning "too small" of an
selection area, regardless of video hardware (at least for the
hardware I have access to).  It's most likely some sort of inherent
limitation in a gstreamer module that istanbul isn't aware of.  If I
had more time I could track this down building gstramer pipelines
outside of istanbul.

Have a student track down exactly which gstreamer module is having a
problem with the "too small" video capture area, and either have them
patch the gstreamer module itself or  provide a less technical work
around which is istanbul specific to avoid the problematic conditions
which gstreamer pipeline doesn't handle.
