Sorry for the rushed report, I was at work with little time to write it better.
So, here is the steps I performed:

1. remove the old sandbox for sysprof-kmod (rm -rf sysprof-kmod)
2. download a new sandbox ( cvs co sysprof-kmod )
In devel subdir:
3. imported new sources ( make new-sources FILES="sysprof-1.0.5.tar.gz")
4. edited and committed .spec for the new release
5. make tag build

this was OK (or at least, buildsys was happy with it...)

now in FC-6 subdir:
6. imported new sources ( make new-sources FILES="sysprof-1.0.5.tar.gz")
7. edited and committed .spec for the new release
8. "make tag build" fails with:

[giallu@hal9001 FC-6]$ make tag build
cvs tag -c sysprof-kmod-1_0_5-1_2_6_18_1_2798_fc6

Do you have a .rpmmacros and ~/rpmbuild on the machine where you tried
to tag? Is kmodtool available from where you tag?

Yes and yes.
