Adding to all valiud points made by other: Usually depsolvers only know about file conflicts when they unleash the rpm transaction which then fails. An explicit Conflicts: informs the depsolver early in its computation about whether to not include the conflicting package or sometimes even to remove a package. E.g. when packages A and B conflict, explicitly asking a depsolver to install B may remove A (I know it's the case for apt and smart, not 100% sure about yum). Whether this policy or intelligent depsolvers is desired or not is another topic, the explict Conflicts: just enables the processing of this information into depsolver mechanics. -- Axel.Thimm at ATrpms.net
