Yes.

It depends entirely on the software doing the query.  Here's an example 
from one of my Apache HTTPd configs :

AuthLDAPURL 
"ldap://<server>/ou=People,dc=franceix,dc=net?uid??(|(gidNumber=10000)(gidNumber=11000))"
