What's the purpose of "NT user" attributes available on the user properties screen? I thought this is the way to authenticate Windows clients, but from what I've seen on the list, the only way to do it is by installing pgina. Or is "NT user" the way to configure the back-end for pgina?

Those attributes are used by the 'Winsync' feature of FDS.
Winsync allows two-way syncronization of user and group
information between FDS and either Active Directory or NT4.
